Just a brief word on holiday home rental - gites and cottages in the French countryside. FRANCE A LA CARTE does not deal with these but we have launched a site - www.alacartegites.com where we feature good quality gites that we know and have visited. We don't make any money out of the site - clients book directly with the owner. Eventually we hope to have a database of 500 or so gites in the SW of France that will supplement our other offers of hotel or campsite bungalow accommodation.
Anyway, I've just added a most remarkable group of gites to the site in the southern Gers, Gascony. Between Toulouse and Lourdes, not far from the Pyrenees, there are 8 houses on the estate near Masseube, all different, all old and refurbished, all well-equipped and incredibly cheap. Prices range from 180 to 500 euros per week in high season ... and some of them have 5 bedrooms!

The catch is that the owner does not have email ("je ne comprends rien!") or english ... and you have to book by phone and post. Get out those old school french primers and get working!
